Is Michael Ballack The Biggest Loser ?
Amazing striking skills excellent technique good with his head and with an excellent finishing touch. Michael Ballack was the most gifted German player of his generation. But he’ll also be forever known as one of the biggest losers of all time.
Voted best German player in 2002, 2003 and 2005 Michael Ballack had a remarkable career. The German midfielder was a jack of all trades but Ballack was also cursed. They say lightning never strikes the same place twice.
But poor Michael Ballack seems proof of the opposite his first stroke of terrible luck struck. In 2002 his first year with Bayer 04 Leverkusen he successfully lost the German Cup final, UEFA Champions League final and was ranked only second in the Bundesliga.
A few days later in Japan he lost the FIFA World Cup final against Brazil. Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid stole the UEFA Champions League out from under him. Ronaldo’s Brazil team stole his FIFA World Cup in spite of a total of 29 goals this year he won nothing.
He was hit by another wave of bad luck in 2008 with Chelsea FC he lost the League Cup final, the UEFA Champions League final and was ranked second in the Premier League.
A few weeks later he lost a 2008 EURO final against Spain. Manchester United deprived him of winning the Champions League and Spain kept him from winning the 2008 EURO.
Michael Ballack did win 7 champion titles and 8 national cups. But he never did win a single Champions League title and he never won anything with Germany either. But he doesn’t see it as a problem.
Titles can be overestimated. Of course, Lothar Matthäus will always be associated with the 1990 FIFA World Cup. But not everyone remembers right away that titles Johan Cruyff or Luis Figo won. People are more likely to remember the way they played and how important they were to their teams. I hope people will remember me as a special football player.
Michael Ballack doesn’t share Franz Beckenbauer’s record nevertheless he is a well liked player in his country. After the 2008 EURO Cup Ballack and his teammates were welcomed home as heroes. As if they actually were the champions of Europe.
Ballack may not have won the cup but he won the German’s people heart and that might be the greatest victory.
